The closing of Amanda Gorman’s inaugural poem:
When day comes, we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid.
The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light,
if only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.
Amanda Gorman, the 22 year-old poet who spoke at the inauguration, grew up in a single parent household. She had a speech impediment for which she received speech therapy as well as an auditory processing disorder and a hypersensitivity to sound. All these obstacles could have stopped Amanda in her tracks but instead she saw them as strengths.
As we start a new semester of possibilities, Amanda Gorman’s story is a reminder to all of us of what can be “If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
North Star parents and guardians, you have embodied bravery this school year. You’ve made hard decisions about whether to have your child learn in-person or remotely. You’ve taken on additional responsibilities to support your child’s learning and to make sure your child’s technology is working so they can access learning.
We are very grateful for your partnership with us in this most challenging year.
