NSE December Newsletter
Greetings North Star Families,
With the new year fast approaching, I wanted to share how grateful we are to have our Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) in the building. These volunteers, mostly dads but some moms too, work both inside and outside of the building to promote school safety and student engagement. Students LOVE getting to see parents in classrooms and at recess. It lets our students know how much our community values learning.
Thanks to all our parents who attended our 4th grade Parent Night. 4th graders and their parents engaged in math games. Our next parent night will feature 2nd grade. It will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 5:30 to 7pm. Be on the lookout for more information from your child’s teacher.
Thank you for participating in our Great American Fundraiser! We raised $2,128.05 which we are using to purchase much needed items for classrooms across the building.
December is when we begin our mid-year assessments to measure student growth and achievement. Every student in grades 1-5 is assessed in reading and math through our computerized assessment system called MAPS. In January we will begin ACCESS testing which measures student’s growth for English Language Learners. We will also have an assessment day on Friday, January 18th so we can evaluate student growth in fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in reading. Using multiple measures will ensure that we have a complete picture of each student as a learner.
On December 19th our Choir Cubs will present their concert, “Holiday Favorites.” They will be sharing some new holiday songs that showcase their hard work and dedication. See you there!
Winter break begins Friday, December 21st and students return to school on Tuesday, January 8th.
