NSE December Newsletter
Greetings North Star Families,
It has been very busy at North Star! Here are a few highlights of what we have been doing and some upcoming events.
Thanks to all our 4th and 5th grade parents who braved the cold weather on October 26th to participate in our Parent Night. Our 4th grade parents were treated to math games and snacks along with some lucky gift card winners! With the help of representatives from Book Trust, our 5th grade teachers shared with parents how to keep students interested in reading. Some lucky participants were rewarded with books!
Our next parent night will feature 1st grade. It will be held on Thursday, January 25th from 5:30 to 7pm. Be on the lookout for more information from your child’s teacher.
Thank you for participating in our Great American Fundraiser! We raised $2652.60 which we are using to purchase iPods and Chromebooks to support struggling readers.
December is when we begin our mid-year assessments to measure student growth and achievement. Every student in grades 1-5 is assessed in reading and math through our computerized assessment system called MAPS. In January we will begin ACCESS testing which measures student’s growth for English Language Learners. We will also have an assessment day on Friday, January 12th so we can evaluate student growth in fluency, accuracy, and comprehension in reading. Using multiple measures will ensure that we have a complete picture of each student as a learner.
On December 21st our Choir Cubs will perform the musical, "A BEAR-Y Merry Holiday”. The musical focuses on inclusion and acceptance using the story of the Polar Bears throwing a bear-y big holiday celebration at the North Pole and having guests from around the world – black bears and brown bears, rapping grizzlies, pirouetting dancing bears, teddy bears, Kodiaks from nearby Alaska, and more! See you there!
Winter break begins Friday, December 22nd and students return to school on Tuesday, January 9th.
